Manufacturer Warranty versus Guarantee

Dear customers, recently there have been more and more enquiries regarding Warranty service when buying IDC products . The term “guarantee” is always confusing.

When selling goods, the buyer receives a claim against the seller for “Warranty.” This is a legal obligation of the seller and is valid throughout Europe. In common parlance this “warranty” is often erroneously referred to as “guarantee”. However, the difference to the “guarantee” is essential: the claims from the “guarantee” are against the seller, not the manufacturer of the goods.

Example: You live in Germany and buy a device from a dealer in Great Britain. This device has a defect after 5 months which is not caused by incorrect operation. In this case the legal “warranty” applies. However, you only have this warranty claim against the dealer, not the manufacturer. This means that you have to send the device back to the dealer in Great Britain to assert your claims, as the dealer is the contractual partner, not the manufacturer.

The “warranty” is different. The “guarantee” is a voluntary contractual service of the manufacturer. This means for you that you can ideally expect services that are above those of the “warranty” and that you can contact the manufacturer directly in case of damage. The prerequisite for this obligation of the manufacturer is the conclusion of a guarantee contract between you and the manufacturer.

Manufacturers offer a manufacturer’s warranty extended to 5 or more years. To to obtain this guarantee (guarantee contract), two conditions must be met:

1.) The products represented by IDC must have been purchased from a dealer authorised by IDC Klaassen. IDC Klaassen will not provide any services such as advice, service or repairs for products purchased from dealers not authorised by IDC Klaassen. Authorised dealers can be checked on the IDC Klaassen dealer search page.

2.) You must register the product on the IDC Klaassen website under the menu item Product Registration, together with the proof of purchase (to ensure that the purchase date is correct and that the product was purchased from an authorised dealer).

With this registration you will receive a manufacturer’s warranty of 2 years according to the manufacturer’s specifications, regardless of your warranty claim against the seller, and your contact person in case of damage is us (IDC Klaassen), via your dealer.
